The Best Essential Oils for Your Best Skin

There's been quite a bit of hype over the past couple of years over a return to more natural and balanced skincare. Facial oils have dominated the conversation, and for good reason!

Historically, oil has had a bad rep in skincare. Those of us with oily skin (cough *me* cough) blamed it for everything from acne to too-shiny skin in photos and did everything in our power to eliminate it. I've even put rubbing alcohol on my face. Those who had combination or drier skin, often used oil-free skincare products, too.

However, oils can balance oily skin and moisturize dry skin, serve as cleansers and makeup removers, and nourish your nails, hair, and skin. While the right oil for you depends on your skin type and concerns, skincare experts recommend changing your oils to adjust for how different seasons affect your skin. For example, in the winter you may want a heavier oil and a lighter one in the summer.

Below are five of my oil essentials for common beauty concerns.

The Oil: Summer Facial Oil by de Mamiel
Best For: Warmer weather

de Mamiel has something of a cult following and a set of four seasonal facial oils, each distinctly created to treat common skincare woes and emotions of Summer, Spring, Autumn, and Winter. These oils are incredible and, as someone who faces an influx of breakouts in the summer, this particular concoction is #blessed. Designed with evening primrose oil, rosehip oil (my fave), calendula oil, and seabuckthorn pulp Co2 extract, this oil is anti-inflammatory, nourishing, and protective for those outdoor summer days.

The Oil: Flawless Skin Rose-Infused Nourishing Oil by Laura Mercier
Best For: Oily/Acne-Prone Skin

I love Laura Mercier skincare and makeup in general and this rosehip infused oil is no exception. Sunflower and safflower oil also make key appearances in this nourishing, rose-scented oil. Flawless skin is an accurate but incomplete description: this oil is not only moisturizing for the skin, but can also be used just about everywhere: nails, dry elbows, and hair to tame flyaways and frizz.

The Oil: Pure Jojoba Oil
Best For: Literally Everyone & Everything

You can use pure, organic jojoba oil for just about anything: moisturizing cuticles, as a cleanser and makeup remover, as a body moisturizer for dry skin, and as a carrier oil. Part of what makes jojoba oil so special is that it mimics the oil your skin naturally produces and balances it, whether you have oily or dry skin (or are somewhere in between). It's often inexpensive and can be found everywhere - but, personally, I keep a reserve. In the US, Target and Whole Foods are probably your best bets for price and quantity.

The Oil: Phoenix Facial Oil by Herbivore Botanicals
Best For: Dry Skin, Weather Damage

Herbivore Botanicals has a range of incredible skincare products, and their Phoenix Facial Oil is no exception. Ingredients include rosehip oil, sea buckthorn oil, CoQ10 (which assists in skin's natural collagen production and ability to regenerate skin cells), neroli oil (to reduce capillaries), jojoba oil, and Vitamin E. Rosehip oil is one of my favorite things on the planet, and I often use it alone as a nightly moisturizer. The combination of these super star oils is what makes this particular oil perfect for those winter months when all skin types are at their most vulnerable.

The Oil: Pure Moroccan Argan Oil by MoroccanOil
Best For: Nail and Hair Care, Anti-Aging

Argan oil is something of a miracle drug: rich in vitamin E, fatty acids and antioxidants. MoroccanOil's Pure Argan Oil is paraben- and fragrance-free and provides a one-step treatment for skin, nails, and hair. A perfect entry-level oil, use it where you're feeling extra dry, to tame hair, and nourish nails in place of otherwise damaging products.
